The Record

Matt Mazzeo

Twenty years, three arenas, one skill: finding the person worth betting on before the world agrees.

2006–2012Agent, CAA

I got to CAA by doing free work until someone noticed, and stayed seven years. I started the agency’s digital media group when the smart money said the internet was a distribution problem, not a talent problem. We signed Michelle Phan and Donald Glover early, incubated Funny or Die and WhoSay, and helped some of the biggest names in Hollywood find their footing in tech. The most fun job you could have in your twenties.

2012–2017Managing Director,
Lowercase Capital

I joined Chris Sacca to build Lowercase Capital and took over as Managing Director in 2014, running Frontier, our $40M early-stage fund, out of LA. No Sand Hill Road address, on purpose. I worked with founders from their first pitch and helped manage a portfolio of forty-plus seed and Series A companies.

Worked with

Stripe · Slack · Hinge · Handshake · Mark43 · Automattic · Brightwheel · Binti · Docker

2018–2022General Partner,
Coatue

I joined Coatue to help launch the firm’s venture practice and led its private consumer strategy. Coatue invests at every stage of the game, from first checks to public markets, and practicing the craft alongside the world’s best public-market investors changed how I see companies.

2022–Investing

On my own now, investing $250K to $1M in talented builders at the application layer of AI: the products, agents, and interfaces being built on top of the models.

In their words

I’m yet to meet a more product-focused VC than Matt. He works like hell, and when he commits he moves mountains.
Amjad Masad · Replit
Mazz was super helpful in the early days of Supabase. If I had the chance, I’d love to work with him again and I’d tell founders the same.
Paul Copplestone · Supabase
If I remember correctly, he was the first non-doctor or dentist that said yes.
Garrett Lord · Handshake
Matt was instrumental in getting DoNotPay started. He catalyzed our seed round and has been an amazing thought partner since then. I strongly recommend every founder works with him.
Josh Browder · DoNotPay
He has one of the best product intuitions of any investor I’ve met and is a builder himself.
Dylan Diamond · Saturn
Matt is simply a great human being who plays the infinite game, and I would jump at the chance to work with him again.
Nick Fajt · Rec Room
Because of all his help I asked Matt to also invest personally in my next business, even though the round was much oversubscribed.
Harish Abbott · Deliverr & Augment
